Raya and the Last Dragon
Set in a South-east Asia-inspired world, this Disney animated film comes from screenwriters Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim, who trace their roots to Vietnam and Malaysia respectively. In the fictional land of Kumandra, Princess Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) must look for and bond with the dragon Sisu (Awkwafina) to protect her people from the various monsters. Raya and the Last Dragon is set to release on March 5.

Godzilla vs. Kong
As a direct sequel to the movies in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong is set to answer the most asked cinematic question of who would emerge victorious from this epic showdown. This movie is the first time that these two iconic monsters have shared the screen since King Kong Vs. Godzilla (1962). However, this new movie is not a remake but an entirely original story. While the Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) didn’t do very well in the box-office, the anticipation for the new movie is very high. It will be released on March 26 this year.

A Quiet Place: Part II
After a long delay, the sequel of the popular 2018 title A Quiet Place will finally make it theaters this year. Directed and written by John Krasinski, who also starred in the first film along with his wife Emily Blunt, the plot of A Quiet Place: Part II will follow the Abbott family as they leave their home and venture out into the unforgiving world. This time, the cast will also include Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy. The movie has been delayed several times and it is now set to release on September 17.

Black Widow
The iconic Marvel superhero Natasha Romanoff goes from being a supporting character to having her own film. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, the plot of Black Widow will include bits of the superhero’s origin story. The movie also kicks off phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which introduces new stories and characters following the events of Avengers: Endgame and Spiderman-Man: Far from Home. Black Widow will hit theaters on May 7.

Fast and Furious 9
Fast and Furious returns in the follow-up to the Fate of the Furious (2017). Apart from the returning cast, e.g. Vin Diesel, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, and Michelle Rodriquez, wrestler John Cena enters the franchise to play the role of Dominic’s long-lost brother. One point of interest regarding F9 is the return of the beloved character of Han (Sung Kang). In Tokyo Drift (2006), he was seen to have died but the trailer for the upcoming film shows that he is very much alive and everyone is wondering how. Fast and Furious 9 is coming to cinema on May 28.

Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise will revive one of his iconic characters Pete “Maverick” Mitchell this year in Top Gun: Maverick. Over thirty-four years since Maverick first appeared on the screen, he is now an experienced test pilot and is in charge of a new group of Top Gun graduates preparing for a special mission. With his late friend Goose’s son now under his command, Maverick must face the ghosts of his past. The movie has been delayed several times and it is currently scheduled to be released on July 2.

The King’s Man
The new installment in the Kingsman franchise, The King’s Man takes place in the early 1900s. It serves a prequel to other movies in the franchise and focuses on the origins of the spy agency during WWI. The movie features new cast which means Taron Egerton and Colin Firth will not be returning for this installment. The good news is, there is plenty of star power here, with a superb cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, and Gemma Arterton. There have been a few changes to the release date of The King’s Man. Currently it is set to release on August 20.

The Many Saints of Newark
Set in The Sopranos world, the plot of The Many Saints of Newark follows the formative years of Tony Soprano. Michael Gandolfini will portray a younger version of the character that has been made famous by his late father, James Gandolfini. Other cast members include Ray Liotta, Billy Magnussen, Jon Bernthal, Leslie Odom Jr. and Alessandro Nivola. The Many Saints of Newark is due to hit screens on September 24.

No Time to Die
The Bond series will return this year, with Daniel Craig making his final appearance as the man himself. The plot of this film is set five years after the events of Spectre (2015). Bond has left the spy game but is lured back one more time to take care of a new antagonist Safin (Rami Malek). Lea Seydoux will also star in the movie and Christoph Waltz and Ralph Fiennes are also making a return. After several delays, the new release date of No Time to Die is October 8.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife
In 2016, the all-female Ghostbusters reboot died a death. After that, producers of the franchise scrapped that specific timeline and decided to make a direct sequel to the first two Ghostbusters movies that were released in the 1980s. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman and most of the original cast is back: Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, etc. The film’s released date has been delayed again. It has now moved from June, 2021 to November 11, 2021.
