Pet Sematary: Bloodlines
"Pet Sematary" is a chilling tale of death, resurrection, and the consequences of meddling with the natural order. Based on Stephen King's 1983 horror novel, the story has been adapted into film on multiple occasions, with the most notable versions released in 1989 and 2019.
In the 1989 adaptation, directed by Mary Lambert, Dr. Louis Creed relocates with his wife Rachel, their two children Ellie and Gage, and their cat Church to a rural home in Maine. The family soon learns of a pet cemetery (intentionally misspelled as "sematary") behind their house, where local children bury their deceased pets. Their elderly neighbor, Jud Crandall, introduces them to the lore of the land. Beyond the pet cemetery lies an ancient Micmac burial ground, said to have the power to bring the dead back to life.
The Creed family's life takes a tragic turn when Church is killed by a speeding truck. Guided by Jud, Louis buries the cat in the Micmac ground, and Church returns – but changed, more aggressive. The horror escalates when the Creed's toddler, Gage, meets a similar fate as Church. Overwhelmed by grief, Louis buries his son in the forbidden ground, despite Jud's warnings. Gage returns, not as the innocent child they knew, but as something sinister. The movie culminates in a series of tragic events, emphasizing the adage: "Sometimes dead is better."
The 2019 adaptation, directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, retains the core premise but introduces several changes. The most significant deviation is that it's not Gage, but Ellie, the Creed's older child, who is killed and subsequently resurrected. This shift adds a new layer of horror, as Ellie's understanding of her death and resurrection is more profound than a toddler's would be. The film delves deeper into Rachel's traumatic past, involving the death of her sister Zelda, which adds to the family's spiral into darkness. Like the original, the 2019 version underscores the dire consequences of attempting to overcome death.
