Written by Christian Torpe and directed by Roger Michell, Blackbird is a remake of the 2014 Danish drama Silent Heart and it tells the story of Lily, who was diagnosed with ALS. Lily invites her family over to spend a weekend with them before she commits suicide.
The terminal illness that Lily has is causing her body to physically deteriorate and it will be a matter of time before it completely shuts down. Choosing to avoid this fate, she – with the help of her doctor husband Paul – decides that she will die on her on terms. But before she does that, she invites her family over so that they are around her when it happens.
Blackbird’s cast include Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Sam Neil, Lindsay Duncan, Bex Taylor-Klaus, and Mia Wasikowska among others. While the story of the film is about death, it’s also about family understanding and love. The movie was last shown in November, 2019 and it is set to release worldwide in May, 2020. Hopefully not getting delayed.
